George S. Blake diary, 1866-1867.

Diary kept by Commodore George S. Blake while keeping lighthouse duties in Boston Harbor, 1866-67. Blake served as Lighthouse Inspector for the United States Lighthouse Service. Daily entries describe weather conditions and boats adrift in the harbor; and include comments and critiques of family members, politics, and the black suffrage movement. Also includes an albumen print of Blake's granddaughter pasted into the diary.

George Smith Blake (1803-1871) was the son of Francis Blake (1774-1817). He entered the Navy as a very young man and rose to the rank of commodore before his retirement.
